Pigment chemistry decides the winner

Saline wins on cosmetic blends — iron oxides, titanium dioxide, anything recent or shallow — because it lifts them without the oxidation risk that makes lasering unknown PMU pigment a gamble. And the sequence wins on hybrids: plenty of Michigan brows carry both an old dark tattoo underneath and newer PMU on top, and the strongest plan runs saline first to lift the oxidation-prone layers, then laser to shatter the deep carbon base. Skin tone: the variable the brochures skip
Laser energy can’t fully distinguish tattoo pigment from your skin’s own melanin, so Fitzpatrick type shapes the laser plan. Deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) need the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength — which passes melanin relatively safely — at conservative settings, with longer intervals; the shorter wavelengths that speed up removal on fair skin raise real hypopigmentation risk on darker skin. Tanned skin needs to untan before treatment, full stop. Saline, by contrast, is skin-tone agnostic — though deeper tones carry their own keloid and post-inflammatory pigmentation considerations there too. If you’re Fitzpatrick IV or deeper, the single most important credential to verify is a laser provider with healed results on skin like yours.
Sessions, money, and the honest bottom line
Counts: laser typically runs 3–8 brow sessions; saline 3–6; waiting takes 2–5+ years to matter and dark work may outlast your patience by decades. Per session: laser $100–$250, saline $150–$300, waiting free. Realistic totals: laser $450–$1,200 on suitable pigment, saline $500–$1,800, waiting $0 plus years of penciling over it. Downtime per session: laser days, saline two weeks of strict dry-heal scabbing. The bottom line without a thumb on the scale: if a test spot confirms carbon-friendly pigment, laser is usually the fastest and cheapest exit; if your work is recent, shallow, or chemically unknown PMU, saline is the safer money; if it’s mild and you’re merely annoyed, waiting is underrated.
