What SMP actually does

Scalp micropigmentation is pointillism at follicle scale. A practitioner uses a machine and specialized needles to place thousands of individual pigment impressions across the scalp, each one sized and spaced to match a real shaved follicle. Done well, the result is a head that reads as a deliberate buzz cut — the guy who shaves his head because he wants to, not because he ran out of options. On men who still have hair, the same dots go between existing follicles to close the gap between hair and scalp, so a thinning crown stops reading as thin under overhead light.

The whole illusion lives or dies on three disciplines: dot size, needle depth, and pigment dilution. Dots placed too deep migrate and swell into blotches. Pigment mixed too strong heals harsh and inky. Impressions sized inconsistently read as texture, not follicles. This is why SMP has a wider quality spread than almost any other PMU service — the technique looks simple and absolutely is not. Bad SMP is famous for two failure modes: blue-gray polka dots and the dreaded helmet hairline, a razor-sharp straight edge no adult male hairline has ever grown. Both are avoidable, and both are exactly what our vetting screens out.

Who it serves

Three groups make up nearly every SMP appointment in Michigan. First, men with advanced loss — Norwood 5, 6, 7 — who are done fighting it and want the shaved look to be a clean, even one. Second, men and women with diffuse thinning who keep their hair length and want the scalp show-through gone; density work under existing hair is some of the most satisfying SMP there is. Third, hair-transplant patients hiding the receipt: FUT strip scars across the back of the head, and patchy FUE donor zones, both camouflage remarkably well once dots are matched to the surrounding follicle pattern.

Treatment is layered across two to four sessions spaced 10–14 days apart, building density gradually the way a printer builds an image in passes. Rushing full saturation into one sitting is a hallmark of inexperience — the scalp needs to heal and reveal what held before the next layer goes in.
